Rothoblaas: technology and elegance in the warehouse

Sector: Vertical farm

Rothoblaas is an Italian multinational based in Cortaccia (BZ), it was founded in 1991 and it provides technological solutions for wood construction. The company operates in 70 markets, and it is growing constantly, characterising a 30% increase in revenues in 2021. The company is well-known to have the central warehouse made by a wood self-supporting structure which gives an important aesthetic impact and it was object of international architectural prizes.

Problem

The rapid growth of the firm in the last few years led to the need to increase the size of the warehouse. The capacity of 11.500 pallets is not sufficient anymore to support the aims of the firm in the long term.
Moreover, there is also the need to improve its own picking performance.

Solution

Thanks to the 4.0 incentives, Rothoblaas decided to collaborate with Automha to build the automatic warehouse. Automha is the perfect partner for this company because of the same dimensions of the two plants and under a geographic point of view.

Automha managed to centre the technological objective that Rothoblaas wanted, combining efficiency and sustainability.

The warehouse, 3200 mq wide, has been projected to store around 18.800 pallets, guaranteeing a performance of 80 pallets/h in inbound and 120 pallets/h in outbound, divided into 5 interface zones with the operators. The system has also 6 bidirectional picking positions and 2 positions each of them with 8 gravity buffer channels for pre-set up shipments. The flow of pallets between the warehouse area and the inlet / outlet bays is regulated and fed by the closed Rushmover circuit on which a total of 8 shuttles travel in a loop. Finally, the handling areas have been designed to allow the handling of loads with electric pallet trucks in the loading and unloading operations flush with the floor.

In Cortaccia it is managed four different types of load (800×1100 x h750/800 mm, 1500 x 1200 x h1200 mm, 800 x1200 x h 1850 mm, 800 x 1140 x h800 mm) with a minimum weight of the load unit of 1000 kg; whereas, in outbound, the delivery units are mostly pallets, most of them directed to refilling.

Advantages

Thanks to the new system the picking capacity is consistently improved, and the maximum capacity of the warehouse is increased from 11.500 to 18.000 pallets.

The warehouse

  • Width of the structure: 3,200 mq
  • Available pallets positions: 18,000
  • Height under beam: 21 mt
  • Throughput: 98 IN + 98 OUT
  • Stacker Cranes: 4
  • RushMover: 8
  • LU: 1,000kg
  • 800x1100x750
  • 800x1200x800
  • 1500x1200x1200
